The vision of a company reinventing materials

Amorphous metals are the next revolution in materials; we’ve been convinced of that from day one. Because behind the science, there are real, concrete problems that industry faces every day, we’re on the way to solving them. That’s why we created Vulkam.

Sébastien GRAVIER
CEO of Vulkam
Our Story

Vulkam is a DeepTech startup founded in 2017, emerging from the scientific ecosystem of Grenoble. But before being a company, Vulkam is a conviction: fundamental research deserves to change the real world, not just academic journals.

This conviction is rooted in more than 30 years of work conducted at the SIMAP laboratory (Science and Engineering of Materials and Processes), a European leader in metallurgy.

Decades spent exploring the atomic structure of amorphous metal alloys, mastering their properties, and defining the conditions for their production, a rare body of knowledge, patiently accumulated, and long confined to scientific publications.

Vulkam has chosen to do something different with it: an industrial technology, serving those who want to design differently.
Bringing scientific breakthroughs to market

This conviction guided Sébastien Gravier and Alexis Lenain when they co-founded Vulkam: not to let decades of research gather dust on the shelf, but to transform it into concrete industrial solutions.

As early as 2015, even before the company was officially founded, long-term industrial partnerships were established.

The goal was clear from the start :

co-develop real-world applications and prepare for the industrialization of amorphous alloys with those who would need them.

2026 : Launch of large-scale production

This ambition is now a tangible reality.

Vulkam now brings together a team of approximately 40 employees (engineers, researchers, and process specialists) engaged in three complementary activities:

  • the development of proprietary materials (Vulkalloys®)
  • the design of production machinery
  • the manufacture of precision components

And the next milestone has already been reached: in 2026, Vulkam opened its first plant (2,800 square meters, including 2,200 square meters dedicated to industrial operations and R&D) dedicated to amorphous metallurgy. A complete production line, from alloy development to the production of parts.

A milestone marking the definitive transition from the laboratory to production.

Foire aux questions

Is Vulkam a manufacturer of high-precision metal components?

Yes. Vulkam designs and manufactures high-precision metal components from proprietary
amorphous metals (Vulkalloys®), for industries that accept no compromise: watchmaking,
medical, micromechanics, and precision engineering. As a fully French manufacturer of
amorphous metal components, Vulkam controls the entire chain from alloy formulation
through to finished part delivery.

Entirely in France, in Grenoble. Since 2026, Vulkam operates its own 2,800 m² facility with a complete production chain from amorphous metal elaboration through to finished component production with no outsourcing and no compromise on quality

Over 30 years of fundamental research at the SIMAP laboratory, a European reference in metallurgy. This rare scientific foundation, built around the unique properties of amorphous metals, is what Sébastien Gravier and Alexis Lenain chose to industrialize rather than leave confined to academic research. It is this depth that enables Vulkam to produce amorphous metal components beyond the reach of conventional manufacturing processes
